Located less than two miles west of downtown Cleveland, the Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood has played an active role in the city’s growth. As shipping and industrial development emerged during the mid-nineteenth century as key components of Cleveland’s development, the Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood grew as a result. The neighborhood’s proximity to Lake Erie and major transportation corridors proved to be significant attractions to both businesses and residents.
The neighborhood boundaries are I-90 on the southern border and Lake Erie on the northern border. W. 85th street justifies the west end of the neighborhood while W. 47th street is the eastern border. Nearby neighborhoods are Ohio City, Stockyards, and Cudell.
The homes originally built for shipping tycoons and business leaders stand as neighborhood showpieces and modest workers’ cottages remain as remnants of the neighborhood’s hard-working origins.
